From virtual to participatory learning with technology during COVID-19

During COVID-19, schools around the world rapidly went online. Examining youth technology use reveals sharp inequities within United States’ education system and incongruencies between technologies used in virtual schooling those lives of students outside school. In affluent communities, is supported by a distributed infrastructure that coordinates students’ knowledge work. This home school features material, human, structural capital facilitates development as nascent workers. Technology during keeps activity grounded “walls” school; schooling, have little voice setting learning goals or contributing “content.” at for entertainment stems from their own them active inquisitors seeking out information extending social networks, crucially, using participatory such Discord communications. An extended period could enable rethinking role schools, including an embrace play, emotional design, communications, place-based learning, embodied understandings, creative construction.
